Work and Play

I’ve been reading over the past few days. I read Chapter 1 of The Almanack of Naval Ravikant: A Guide to Wealth and Happiness (compiled and edited by Eric Jorgenson). Then I randomly picked up The Underlying Logic by Run Liu this morning.
I am not sure if you know, but instead of reading word-for-word, cover-to-cover, I have a habit of only reading the sections I feel like reading. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying I never read the whole chapter. In fact, I read the entire Chapter 1 in The Almanack of Naval Ravikant.
To pick which section to read, I always look at the table of contents for any books. In the Underlying Logic, there is a section on treating work as play.I glanced over and thought, “Is it déjà vu? I just read something very similar in The Almanack of Naval Ravikant.”
What a coincidence that both books suggest that we should have a close relationship between work and play?
In The Almanack of Naval Ravikant, the message is to find work that feels like play: “It looks like work to others, but it feels like play to me.”
In The Underlying Logic, Liu says he treats work as play—so he’s having a blast, and he never feels like he’s working his fingers to the bone. It’s so fun that he doesn't feel exhausted.
Wait a minute, you asked: “Is that the secret to success?”
No way, it is hardly any secret.
I remember vividly that there is a saying about mixing business with pleasure when I was very young. I love the idea of it so much—I am literally practising every day.
It doesn’t matter whether you actively go out and find work that feels like play, or you treat your work as play; the bottom line is—have fun. And if you can, have lots of fun at whatever you are working on. I think this is perhaps the only way you can accomplish something persistently and passionately.
